How It Works
When your life and dreams are shifting, you need time and space for you…to figure out your new direction and find a path forward on your journey. You need time and space to:
- let go of what isn’t working and discover new ways of being and doing in the world
- rediscover the power of shifting your perspectives, this allows you to move from being stuck to knowing you have many choices
- dance with aging, rather than resisting it
- navigate transitions with courage and spirit
- move from a place of confusion to recreate your life based on the beauty of your dreams
- listen to the still small voice within, and follow your heart wherever it takes you
Of course, you could do it on your own… but, usually, it’s harder. And nowhere near as fun!
As you begin your journey to awaken to your wisdom there are some key elements that will help you find more aliveness and joy in midlife.
Live your life on purpose
One way of discovering what is really important to you in this new stage of life is to notice what makes your heart sing.
Noticing what makes your heart sing can be a playful and uplifting step in creating your future. Pay attention and see what you learn. Simply becoming aware of what brings you joy each day is a great practice for connecting with yourself and your dreams.
Once you connect with your joy, it will lead you to discover your life purpose.
What brings you joy, magnified and expanded upon, provides a reflection of your core self, of who you are and what you value. Living a life that aligns with your values allows you to create great meaning and passion. As you own your values, you will also discover what you are really good at, what your strengths are, and how you want to build on them. You will begin to live your life on purpose, and your heart will sing as you live in integrity with what really matters.
Commit to Inspired Action
Knowing what really matters is not enough. You need to integrate what’s important into your everyday life. Some tools to do this include:
Shifting habitual thinking
Have you ever noticed that your mind has a will of its own and loves to chatter endlessly? Perhaps your chatter is saying something like “No, you are not okay,” or “This will never work.” Learning to notice your habitual thinking provides you with an awareness of how you are holding yourself back. You begin to shift your perspectives and see new possibilities. When you awaken to your unconscious behaviors and beliefs and move them into consciousness, you are at a place of choice where change can happen.
Noticing your fears
Whenever you make a transition and create something different, fear shows up. It is part of the process. It can feel frightening to lose the comfort of familiarity. Beautifully, naming a fear has a way of dissolving it and putting the power back in your hands. When you develop strategies that let you embrace your fears, you will watch them shift, and use the energy to help move you forward.
Experimenting by taking new actions.
It’s great to learn more about yourself by noticing what makes your heart sing, noticing your fears, and shifting your habitual thinking, but an essential part of this journey is taking different actions. Try doing something that is exciting, and maybe a little scary, and see what happens. You may be surprised at what you learn and be glad you took the risk.
Develop Sustaining Relationships
During midlife, as many of the circumstances of your outer world change, your relationship to yourself, your loved ones, and your community can often make the difference between experiencing joy and wellness, and struggling and consistently getting in your own way.
Having better relationships begins with developing a loving relationship with yourself. Not an easy thing to do. Learning to be tender, compassionate, and accepting of yourself takes practice – and gentleness. It’s important to honor and befriend your true self. Your true self is filled with the wisdom of what has worked, what you need to pay attention to, and what you need to do differently.
Access your body’s wisdom and connect with your spirit
You have lived for many years and have acquired a wisdom, an inner knowing, along the way. Sometimes your wisdom is easy to access. You have clarity and flow. And other times, you feel confused and unsure. Sometimes an external loss will throw you way off course.
The body is an excellent resource for accessing your wisdom as you move through midlife transitions. As you include more of your body’s wisdom in daily living, suddenly you have a greater capacity to slow down, pay attention, and make better decisions. You begin to discover what you need to let go of, what you need to grieve, and what you want to embrace to lead a more satisfying life.
Meditation, walking, gardening, yoga, and any other activity that quiets the mind will work. It’s something about being still, noticing your mind chatter, letting it go, and finding a deeper place of peace within.
When you learn to live your life on purpose, commit to inspired action, develop sustaining relationships, and access your body’s wisdom, you will have the tools to live your best life ever.
Of course, there’s no strict “formula” to awakening in midlife.
But in my years of coaching, I have witnessed how each of these pieces, woven together in a woman’s life, with patient support and loving care, not only moves her out of that uneasy “stuckness” but opens up whole new possibilities from which to live her dreams.
